近日，印度媒體報導，有專家特別發表論文表示，他們合理推測，這張流傳近一世紀的水怪照片，極有可能是海裡大型露脊鯨或是灰鯨的「生殖器」，且是處於「勃起狀態」。

專家認為，以當年那張水怪身型來看，看似相當「挺立」，而鯨魚的生殖器在勃起狀態可達180公分左右，且會浮出水面。
不過，這項最新的說法很快又被推翻了！事實查核網站Snopes表示，水怪照片是由倫敦執業醫師Robert Kenneth Wilson於1943年所拍攝的，而Robert在臨終前坦承，自己拍攝、流出的水怪照片，其實只是一艘潛水艇玩具船。
但事實查核網站Snopes也給首段提及的專家們一個台階下，事實查核網站Snopes表示，先前也曾有海軍水手目睹「巨大海蛇」的傳說，或許那可能就是專家們說的鯨魚生殖器了。

流傳了近一世紀的尼斯湖水怪又有新的討論題材，英國喜劇作家James Felton也在個人社群網站轉發，他和網友開玩笑地討論著：「這下糟了，所有的海怪都要被誤認成鯨魚的生殖器了。」
